ANTIBES ITS CAP & THE GAROUPE

Before arriving in the centre of Antibes, how about stopping off at Fort Carré, one of the first fortified strongholds to be built in Renaissance. Discover its fascinating history, its rampart walk (43 metres above sea level that offers an incredible panoramic view), as well as the surrounding and protected 4 acre park and its abundance of Mediterranean plants.

Next dive into the heart of Old Town Antibes via « the Marine door »: wander at leisure along the narrow cobbled streets to the Cathedral. At the top of the steps visit the medieval Château Grimaldi where musée Picasso can be found, with its numerous masterpieces and artworks including paintings, drawings and ceramics, not to be missed.
Nearby you’ll find the Provençal market (covered market place), held every morning until 1pm. Afterwards stroll through the little shopping streets and discover the large number of boutiques and workshops proposing gourmet produce and local specialties.
Then head to the phare de la Garoupe (75 m above sea level). At the end of its 116 steps you can admire a breathtaking panorama. Sa chapelle Its restored chapel is also worth a visit. « Le Bistrot du Curé », a small café serving local specialities (pan bagnat, Niçois stuffing, pissaladière) in the shade of the pine trees.
Alternatively you could opt for a lunch with your feet in the sand on the Garoupe beach, fabulous place for a swim (the private Keller Beach has sun loungers and parasols for rent).
The famous coastal path, Le sentier de Tire-poil is approx 5 kms long and takes about 2 hrs to walk (plan good walking shoes though; there are a lot of steps). You can find its start directly at the end of the beach. This little corner of paradise attracted the very wealthy from the mid-19 th century onwards and they constructed the most prestigious of residences here. You can perceive them along this stunning coastal trail.
