THE GORGES DU VERDON & VALENSOLE
Dreaming of discovering the biggest canyon in Europe and its amazing landscapes? From the end of June to mid-July the magnificent fields of lavender stretch out in front of you on the Valensole plateau as far as your eye can see, and the turquoise waters of the Sainte Croix lake will beckon you !
The Gorges du Verdon cover almost 100 kms, contain 9 lakes and numerous typical villages, each of them proposing their own unique identity and providing an original take on this unmissable area for visitors to Provence. Plus there are several possible itineraries depending on your desires…..and the weatherforecast.
You can reach the heights of the Gorges du Verdon by passing through Castellane (723 m) a town downstream from the source, then taking the direction of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, classed amongst the most beautiful villages in France dating back from the XVII century. From the Right bank we can take the route des Crêtes (a loop of 24 km from La Palud-sur-Verdon) punctuated by staggering, vertiginous viewpoints, including the aptly named Point Sublime, literally a sight to behold. The plateau of Valensole is situated at around 20 km from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
Must do : The way for cross which overlooks Moustiers to the chapel Notre-Dame de Beauvoir (20 mn of ascent).

In choosing the much wilder and more rugged Left bank, you can discover Trigance, a charming village embracing its feudal castle, the breathtaking balconies of Mescla to the highest bridge in Europe (182 m) « le pont de l’Artuby » a most reputable spot for ‘bungee jumpers’. This itinerary finishes with its highlight, the sublime Corniche road that skirts the precipice for ten kilometers to the Sainte Croix lake, where it is possible to enjoy water sports such as canoeing, pedalo or why not rent an electric boat…
